NEON has released a brutal teaser trailer for Takashi Miike’s Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo, giving audiences a vivid look at the director’s neon-soaked crime thriller. It came just hours after the studio shared first-look photos and confirmed the upcoming movie will deliver the same moral decay and corruption that defined its predecessors.

Shun Oguri stars as a disgraced Tokyo detective whose addictions and corrupt behaviour pull him into a twisted investigation. Lily James plays an enigmatic FBI agent searching for the missing daughter of a powerful American family, a role played by WWE star Liv Morgan. A vengeful former yakuza and a mysterious killer complicate the case further, pushing the detective toward total collapse.
The Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo teaser trailer wastes no time on subtlety. Rapid cuts with scenes reminiscent of Se7en, Oguri’s character unravelling through, and bursts of the extreme violence Miike has built his career upon. The preview confirms the filmmaker leans fully into the franchise’s core tradition: a compromised officer spiralling through addiction and brutality with no clear path to redemption.
The ensemble cast also includes Shotaro Mamiya, Shūhei Nomura, Nanase Nishino, Yuka Kouri, Takanori Iwata, Keisuke Watanabe, Hideo Nakano, Jun Murakami, Jun Kunimura, and Hiroshi Tachi.
Daisuke Tengan wrote the screenplay, reuniting with Miike after their work on Audition and 13 Assassins. Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo follows the basic framework Abel Ferrara established with his harrowing 1992 original, which starred Harvey Keitel as a nameless, drug-addicted NYPD cop.
Werner Herzog then directed the 2009 follow-up Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, casting Nicolas Cage in a performance that had menace with unhinged humour. Ferrara publicly disavowed that film, telling reporters he hoped Herzog and Cage would “die in Hell” for making it. Both films came from producer Edward R. Pressman, though no official narrative links connect the three movies.
NEON will premiere Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo at the Toronto International Film Festival, scheduled for September 10 through 20, 2026. The distributor has not set a domestic theatrical date and currently lists the film only as “coming soon.”
