Kanye West, Foo Fighters, Adele Lead Grammy Nominations

Kanye West leads the 2012 Grammy Awards nominations with seven total nods, while industry darling Adele took six nominations in the most coveted categories: record, album and song of the year.

The full nominees were announced for the 54th annual Grammy Awards Wednesday, with Adele’s “21” competing for Album of The Year with the Foo Fighters‘ “Wasting Light,” Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” Mars’ “Doo-Wops & Hooligans” and Rihanna’s “Loud”.

Best new artist nominees along with Bon Iver are country trio The Band Perry, rappers J. Cole and Nicki Minaj, and knobby DJ sensation Skrillex. Bon Iver, a.k.a. Justin Vernon, was nominated for best record and song for “Holocene.” He’s up against Adele, also nominated in both categories for “Rolling in the Deep”; Bruno Mars, again in both categories for “Grenade”; Mumford & Sons, likewise for “The Cave.”

In the Best Rock Performance category, the nominees spanned across Coldplay for ‘Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall,’ the Decemberists for ‘Down by the Water,’ Foo Fighters for ‘Walk,’ Mumford and Sons for ‘The Cave’ and Radiohead for ‘Lotus Flower’. Memory has trouble recalling when such a varied and interesting rock nomination group existed.

Amy Winehouse, who passed away this Summer, collected a posthumous nomination for her duet with Tony Bennett on “Body and Soul,” in the pop duo or group performance category.

Surprisingly, neither Taylor Swift’s “Speak Now” or Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” sweep the nominations, with just one consideration coming down the line: an Album of the Year nod for “Born This Way.” Swift, whose third album has sold almost 3.8 million copies, is vying for country album honors, and her anti-bullying single “Mean” is nominated for country song and solo performance.
