Curry Barker Gives Update on ‘Grounded, Brutal, Raw’ Texas Chainsaw Massacre Movie

Filmmaker Curry Barker is teasing a much harsher and more character-focused version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The rising horror director recently shared fresh details about his planned movie, calling it “grounded,” “brutal,” and deeply uncomfortable. Barker also made it clear he wants the story to feel personal and emotional instead of just another slasher sequel.

Curry Barker discusses his Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie

While speaking about the project with Variety, Barker explained that his biggest goal is getting viewers attached to the new characters before the horror begins. He said he wants audiences to genuinely care about the people trapped in the nightmare alongside Leatherface and the Sawyer family. According to Barker, the emotional connection matters because “if they do die brutally, we’ll actually be sad that they died.”

Barker also described the upcoming film as “grounded, brutal, raw” and said it should make viewers feel uncomfortable in the same way the original 1974 movie did. He revealed he had long hoped to work on the franchise after learning that A24 secured the rights. Barker called the opportunity “a match made in heaven,” adding that the timing lined up perfectly for him creatively.

In another interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Barker said he does not want the film to feel like a routine intellectual-property reboot. Instead, he hopes the movie stands on its own with memorable world-building and original characters. “I like to create worlds that have an iconicness to it,” Barker said. “I’m always thinking, ‘What’s the Halloween costume?’”

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise remains one of horror’s most recognizable names. Since The Texas Chain Saw Massacre debuted more than 50 years ago, the series has expanded into multiple sequels, remakes, and reboots centered around Leatherface. Fans have continued returning to the franchise because of its gritty atmosphere, disturbing violence, and raw low-budget style that made the original film feel terrifyingly real.
