Veteran NBC News Anchor Announces Exit After Over 2 Decades

A familiar face on American television is stepping away after years of balancing major roles. The well-known journalist and TV show host is moving on from NBC News after more than two decades, marking the end of a demanding and high-profile run.

Peter Alexander reveals he’s leaving NBC News

Peter Alexander shared that he’s leaving NBC News during a weekend broadcast of Today, where he has co-anchored the Saturday edition since 2018. At the same time, he handled duties as the network’s chief White House correspondent, a role that kept him constantly traveling between Washington, D.C., and New York City. After years of juggling both, he decided it was time for a change.

His reason was simple and personal. Alexander said he wanted to spend more time with his family, especially his two young daughters. He admitted he had missed over “220 Friday nights” in recent years because of work. “I’m eager to carve out a better balance between my personal and professional lives,” he said, adding, “family first, the rest is details.”

Over his 22-year career, Alexander covered multiple U.S. presidents, including Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden. He became known for asking direct questions, sometimes sparking tense moments. One notable exchange came during the COVID-19 pandemic when Trump called him a “terrible reporter” after a pointed question (via USA Today).

Within NBC, colleagues praised his range and dedication. Executives described him as a “trusted presence” who handled both breaking political coverage and live television with ease (via Variety).

What comes next is still unclear. Alexander did not reveal his next move, though industry speculation reportedly points to possible openings elsewhere. For now, his departure closes a long chapter defined by relentless reporting, cross-country travel, and a steady on-screen presence that viewers grew used to over the years.
