Is Harry Potter: Wizards Unite The Next AR Craze?

Last year, Niantic’s Pokémon Go swept the nation by storm. Pokémon Go uses GPS tracking on players’ phones to collect Pokémon that appear “in real life”. With over 750 million total downloads and over $1.2 billion in revenue, Pokémon Go is currently the most popular augmented-reality video game in the market.

Now, Niantic looks to exploit another market with just as large of a following as Pokémon. Set to be released in 2018, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is another augmented-reality video game, except with a wizardry twist. According to Niantic, “players will learn spells, explore their real-world neighborhoods and cities to discover & fight legendary beasts and team up with others to take down powerful enemies.”

While augmented-reality games are set in a fantasy world, they do have real-life consequences. There have been reported muggings, people that have trespassed private property to catch Pokémon, and distracted drivers as a result of Pokémon Go. Due to the addicting nature of games, it’s more than likely that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will have a similar effect.
