Jor-El Returns In Latest Superman Comic And It’s Kind Of A Big Deal

Normally, we take it easy on comic book news since for every one of our fans who’re into it, a good three or four aren’t (and that’s being conservative). But for news this big concerning perhaps the most iconic superhero of all time outside of Batman, we’re going to make an exception.

Without getting incredibly nerdy about it, DC Comics is in the middle of a “Rebirth” of its brand which has incorporated Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ classic comic book series Watchmen into the world of the main comic book universe. As such, a mysterious character known as Mr. Oz has emerged, with most assuming his identity to be Ozymandias from the aforementioned Moore and Gibbons project. This has been the theory since last May’s relaunch. Until it was debunked today…

Jor-El Returns In Superman Action Comics #987

Oh snap, that’s Jor-El! Guess that explains why he’s using his best Darth Vader impression on a no doubt confused Supes. What it doesn’t explain, however, is everything else. Why has he kept his identity secret all this time? Why did he tell his son in this issue that humanity isn’t worth saving?

At this point, there are still more questions than answers. The ramifications of this reveal are humongous, and could even cross over into the Superman films in much less time than Jor-El has been “dead” in the books. After all, Bucky/Winter Soldier took over 40 years to be resurrected in the Marvel comics, and yet he was back by the second Captain America movie.

Fortunately, you won’t have long to wait for some more clues. Superman Action Comics #988 will be out on September 27, and is said to explore the origins of Mr. Dad (that’s just what we are calling Jor-El now).
