Julia Roberts May Star in ‘Homecoming’ TV Drama Series

Last week, Julia Roberts inked a deal to executive produce and star in Today Will Be Different, a limited series in development for HBO. This week, Roberts may be making an even bigger TV commitment for a new drama series.

Deadline is reporting that Roberts in talks to star in Homecoming, an adaptation of Gimlet Media’s scripted podcast that debuted last November. Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail is executive producing Homecoming for Universal Cable Productions. There isn’t a network currently attached, but that will probably change very quickly if Roberts ultimately signs on for the show.

The Homecoming podcast is a political thriller that unfolds “in a collage of telephone calls, therapy sessions and overheard conversations” that centers on a caseworker at a secret government facility, which is the part that Roberts will potentially play. In the podcast, that part is played by Catherine Keener, with Oscar Isaac, David Schwimmer, Amy Sedaris, and David Cross in supporting roles.

According to Deadline, Roberts’ potential part in Homecoming will not conflict with her schedule for Today Will Be Different. Which ever series goes first would be Roberts’ first ever starring role in a TV series. Roberts is primarily known for her feature films, including Julia Roberts, Erin Brockovich, Notting HillSteel Magnolias, Ocean’s Eleven, Mona Lisa Smile, Eat Pray Love, and Charlie’s Wilson’s War.
