Marlon Williams is a small-town boy who grew up listening to his dad’s country records and singing in the community church. That he plays American roots music would seem inevitable until you find out that he was born and bred in New Zealand.

Country music is not about where you’re from, but where you’ve been. At its origins, its about heart and soul and Williams has that in spades. I sat down with the young crooner, fresh off a defining set at the Austin City Limits Festival to talk about his hometown of Lyttelton, his Maori background and the first song he wrote for a girl?
