The New Borneland Mixtape is the Life Soundtrack You Need

On “Mix 51/Hunting,” the latest must have mix-tape from Danish production/remix outfit Borneland, siblings Jonas and Micki Borneland stitch soulful vocals – chilly, blue-eyed soul as well as old-fashioned, sweat-drenched testifying – and fat-bottomed funk groves into a set that is as potent a dance-floor filler as it is a cocktail party backdrop. Their knob-turning style flatters the brain while coaxing the ass to move, underscoring the heart beating beneath electronic grooves. They never get so caught up in their own technical abilities that they forget to pull the crowd along. And while they are forward looking, they also respect the architects – as shown by their inclusion of Joey Negro’s “Straight to the Groove Mix” of Loose Change’s “Straight from the Heart,” coming just a few tracks after the lilting, breezy caress of Krucial’s “Feel Something,” which sounds like classic Janet Jackson time-warped into the present.

Of “Mix 51” they write:

“This month’s mixtape is dedicated to our new-old universe: a place where dreams come true and not even the sky is a limit. Our universe is packed with smooth rhythms, cherry hums and funky grooves. It is a place where we and you make the rules, the trees, the flowers, the animals – and the music.”
