Thierry Henry: “Players Don’t Want to Play for Arsenal”

Thierry Henry has raised a valid point concerning his former club Arsenal, noting how the London outfit has been struggling to acquire new players.

Speaking after Arsenal’s 4-3 defeat against Liverpool over the weekend, Henry expressed his concern regarding the rejection Arsenal has faced from the likes of Leicester striker Jamie Vardy, saying: “Something that drives me crazy is that it looks like players don’t want to come to Arsenal.”

He continued: “Vardy rejected Arsenal… it seems like it’s difficult to attract players. I don’t know why, but it seems like it.”

Arsenal pursued Vardy prior to the new Premier League season, after the 29-year-old helped carry his underdog club Leicester to the league trophy last year, becoming the second most prolific goalscorer in the competition alongside Sergio Aguero and behind Harry Kane. However, despite triggering Vardy’s release clause the striker ultimately chose to stay at Leicester, signing a new four-year contract with his club and rejecting a pay increase to make the move to London.

Arsenal started off their new Premier League campaign in exciting (if ultimately disappointing) fashion, coming back from a 3-1 deficit to lose to Liverpool 4-3 at the Emirates. Manager Arsene Wenger said that many of his players were “not ready” for the start of the league as a result of the Euro 2016 tournament,
