The New ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ Trailer Kicks Ass

We’ve all been very curious about Disney’s plan to release one Star Wars movie per year until the end of time as we know it. Will audiences eventually get sick and tired of this galaxy far, far away? And will any of the upcoming episodes and spin-off movies ever turn out as wonky and disappointing as the Ewoks movies?

Fortunately, the marketing department for Star Wars has got some serious game. The newly released trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – about the mission to steal the Death Star plans, immediately prior to the beginning of Episode IV – A New Hope – has a spectacular sense of scale, and an air of grim portent that doesn’t make the adventure look any less fun.

We’re seeing footage here that doesn’t look like any other Star Wars movie, shot from unusual and dynamic angles, and putting characters we don’t know (and are pretty sure aren’t “safe”) in impossibly threatening situations. This isn’t the ongoing story of the Skywalker clan, this is something new that doesn’t have to repeat itself for the sake of A) nostalgia or B) an ongoing theme.

Of course, we won’t know for sure if Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is any good until it premieres on December 16, 2016, but for now we can enjoy a little bit of excitement, the kind that only the best sort of trailers can provide.
