Taylor Swift Wien documentary explores Vienna concert attack plot

Taylor Swift canceled her three Vienna shows during the Eras Tour in August 2024 after authorities received information about a planned terrorist attack. The documentary, Taylor Swift Wien, will examine the events surrounding the planned concerts and the investigation that followed.

Swift shared a statement a few days after the cancellations. She said, “The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows”

According to Variety, U.S. intelligence provided Austrian authorities with a tip about a planned jihadist attack, which authorities ultimately prevented.

According to the documentary’s synopsis, it will explore “two vastly different youth subcultures: the inclusive, empowered world of the Swifties and a realm of toxic masculinity, fueled by online radicalization and a desperate need for validation.”

Two teenage suspects allegedly developed a plan involving weapons and explosives. Thus, intending to kill as many Taylor Swift concertgoers as possible.

Georg Tschurtschenthaler, chief creative officer at Germany’s Beetz Brothers, is co-producing the documentary with Austria’s Markand Media. Speaking to Variety, Tschurtschenthaler described the project as a look at a foiled terrorist attack. He called it the “ticking clock” thriller of how intelligence agencies prevented it. More than 200,000 Swift fans were to come to the Vienna concert from around the world to the Austrian capital’s Ernst Happel Stadium.

As per AP News, the documentary will also examine the case of Beran A. He is an Austrian citizen. He was 19 at the time of the planned attack and had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. Moreover, he was later convicted in Austria and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Tschurtschenthaler said, “There is a new generation of young Islamic terrorists that is growing worldwide who are steeped in social media and different from the old terrorists trained in Al Qaeda camps.”

The project will combine elements of a thriller with a story about women’s empowerment. German broadcaster ZDF is scheduled to air it in October 2027.
