Matt Damon & David Letterman Crash HBO Hit in the Most Unexpected Way

The Gilded Age returned for its fourth season with an unexpected surprise for viewers. Matt Damon and David Letterman made brief, silent appearances in the HBO period drama’s Season 4 premiere. Their unexpected appearances caught viewers’ attention, although the cameos were easy to miss.

According to Deadline, the pair appear around the 8:33 mark, briefly crossing a street together. Damon wears a top hat, white shirt, and ascot beneath a long coat. His sideburns and a fuzzy moustache complete the period look. Letterman sports his familiar beard, a bowler hat, and an all-black outfit.

Neither man speaks during the scene, and both resemble businessmen heading to an important meeting. The humor lies in seeing two famous personalities appear as ordinary background characters rather than taking on prominent roles. Their brief appearances blend seamlessly into the show’s period setting without interrupting the storyline.

The Season 4 premiere also delivers several major developments involving the show’s central characters. Oscar van Rhijn (Blake Ritson) marries Enid Turner (Kelley Curran) in a lavender marriage that outwardly appears to be a happy union. Enid later invites Marian (Louisa Jacobson) to an after-hours gathering, where she reconnects with her former fiancé, Larry Russell (Harry Richardson).

Elsewhere, Peggy celebrates the release of her book, but her future mother-in-law, Elizabeth Kirkland (Phylicia Rashad), remains unimpressed. In England, Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) survives a life-threatening childbirth complication but undergoes a hysterectomy, leaving her unable to carry another pregnancy.

New episodes of The Gilded Age Season 4 air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and are available to stream on HBO Max.
