Dolly Parton Loved Jesus and Gay People — Meg Stalter Says That’s the Point

Dolly Parton’s appeal stretched far beyond country music, and Meg Stalter explained why her death felt so personal. The Hacks actress and rising pop star remembered Parton as someone whose faith, in Stalter’s view, made room for everybody, including gay people who love Jesus.

Parton died on August 25 at 80, leaving fans across generations grieving a cultural icon. For Stalter, 36, the singer represented a version of Christianity rooted in acceptance rather than judgment.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Stalter described the news as devastating. “It was literally devastating, because first of all, I’ll say, Dolly is a true Christian because she loves and accepts everyone,” she said. “And I’m a gay Christian that loves Jesus, God and gay people, and I felt that from Dolly.”

The actress admitted that Parton’s death felt like losing someone close. “Of course, obviously what we’re grieving doesn’t compare to what her family is, but it does feel like, to everyone, we lost a family member,” she told the publication.

That affection also shaped Stalter’s ideas for future red-carpet appearances with former costar Paul Downs. The pair previously spoofed Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner’s Marty Supreme premiere looks. Stalter said her dream tribute involved dressing up as “two Dolly Partons.”

The conversation also touched on Stalter’s debut album, Crave, which grew from the chemistry she shared with collaborators Jesse Thomas and Matias Mora. “We’re addicted to working together,” she said. “I’m not supporting cigarettes, but it’s like how you crave a cigarette, you want more.”

Stalter said her influences included herself, her team, family, and girlfriend. She also cited classic pop stars, particularly those who drew inspiration from Britney Spears, among her influences. Looking ahead, she hoped to work with a wider circle of musicians. One idea involved a competition show where pop stars battled for the chance to collaborate on her song.
