“We lost one of the greats of stage and screen today,” Jackman wrote on Instagram on Thursday.

He also described Stewart as “a tremendous friend and man” before sharing how deeply their friendship had affected him.

“I learned so much from him. I will miss you, Patrick Stewart, all of my days,” Jackman added alongside photos showing the two actors embracing.

Jackman and Stewart shared a long history in the X-Men franchise. Stewart portrayed Professor Charles Xavier, while Jackman played Wolverine.

According to Page Six, they first appeared together in 2000’s X-Men and later reunited for several films, including 2017’s Logan.

Other Marvel stars also honored Stewart following news of his death.

Famke Janssen, who played Jean Grey in the franchise, called Stewart a “legend” and reflected on working with him across multiple projects.

She had previously appeared alongside Stewart in Star Trek: The Next Generation before later joining him in the X-Men films.

Marvel Studios executive Kevin Feige also recalled meeting Stewart on the first X-Men set. Feige praised his warmth, humor, and generosity. He said Stewart had left a lasting impact on the people he mentored.

Marvel Studios separately paid tribute to Stewart’s portrayal of Professor Xavier. The studio credited him with bringing grace, intelligence, and humanity to the character across multiple films.

Stewart’s portrayal of Xavier became a major part of the X-Men franchise, including appearances in the original trilogy, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Logan.

Outside Marvel, Stewart also received tributes from former colleagues, including William Shatner, who described him as “a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor.”

Stewart’s family announced that he died on Wednesday following what they described as a “brief and poignant journey” with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.
