Mark-Paul Gosselaar explains how onscreen intimacy affects his marriage
In an exclusive conversation with Us Weekly, Gosselaar said he does not specifically look for projects involving onscreen romance. He recalled playing Mike Lawson in the short-lived series Pitch. Viewers had hoped his character would develop a romance with Kylie Bunbury’s character, Ginny Baker. Gosselaar discussed the possibility of a romance between Mike and Ginny but remained uncertain about whether the characters would have ended up together.
The actor admitted that he was not rooting for the romantic storyline, joking that he would have to explain the onscreen intimacy to his wife. Gosselaar said, “It’s never a good thing. Anytime there’s any sort of moment of intimacy, I always have to forewarn my wife that this is coming up. She needs earmuffs, an eye mask, and the whole thing anytime I have to be intimate with anybody on screen.” He got married to Catriona McGinn in 2012.
While filming NBC’s Found, he had a similar experience. Fans wanted his character, Sir, to develop a romance with Shanola Hampton’s character, Gabi. He said, “That was a fun show, and it was just getting so good [when it was canceled]. I really felt like we were finding our legs in the second season and understanding these characters a little bit more. I would have loved to have gotten more seasons out of that.”
He added that the onscreen storyline shifted to Gabi and another character, Sir. Gosselaar said, “So I was told that I was only going to be there for two seasons anyway. Now, as we started filming and all you sickos started loving the fact that we were going to be a couple, they wanted to see us extend that.”
Gosselaar also discussed his partnership with AstraZeneca on its cancer biomarker testing awareness campaign. He admitted the campaign feels more personal for him.
