Prince William recently appeared on The Graham Norton Show, where a royal commentator suggested he may have taken a subtle swipe at his estranged brother, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle. Charlotte Griffiths, editor-at-large at The Mail, suggested that William’s choice of words and delivery could be interpreted as a tongue-in-cheek message aimed at the Sussexes.
UK Journalist thinks Prince William made a ‘sly dig’ at Harry and Meghan on talk show
During a special Earthshot Prize edition of The Graham Norton Show, Prince William made a lighthearted remark that later attracted attention. Host Graham Norton asked what career William might have pursued if he had not been born into the royal family. The future king responded with a joke.
“I’m rapidly trying to think about what I can say on television,” William told Norton, drawing laughter from the audience.
William also recalled wanting to become a police officer when he was younger. He later developed an interest in DJing and came up with the stage name DJ Xara. He admitted that his DJ ambitions did not work out.
However, Griffiths suggested that William’s joke reflected his cautious approach to public remarks amid his strained relationship with Harry. Harry had recently stressed his desire to reconcile with his brother. His comments have renewed public interest in the brothers’ strained relationship.
“Some people don’t want it to work out. I want it to work out,” Harry told GQ. “With everything else that’s going on in the world, the most important thing is to reconcile — that’s the key point.”
Some interpreted Harry’s comment as criticism of members of the royal family. However, Prince Harry’s spokesperson has rejected such speculation, saying that Harry’s words were “absolutely not intended as a swipe at his brother or any other member of his family” and were made in a general context.
Griffiths’ interpretation comes amid renewed attention to the brothers’ relationship following Harry’s return to the UK. Tensions between the brothers became increasingly public after Harry and Meghan stepped back from their roles as senior working royals in 2020 and moved to California. Harry’s return to Britain after six years has renewed speculation about the possibility of reconciliation with his family.
