Why Ed Sheeran’s Name Is Coming Up in a Hollywood Culture Clash

Najla Said, daughter of renowned Palestinian-American intellectual Edward Said, has some questions for Ed Sheeran. While praising Macklemore for his support, she wondered how Sheeran could have been unaware of the rapper’s position.

Najla Said questions Ed Sheeran’s awareness of Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian activism

Najla dove right into the controversy around Macklemore’s removal from an Ed Sheeran line-up after their pro-Palestinian messages. Speaking to Variety, she reflected on the wider issues of celebrity activism and freedom of speech. Her remarks have brought Sheeran into a wider debate over celebrity activism, pro-Palestinian advocacy, and the influence of powerful figures on artists’ freedom to express their political views.

“I am very impressed with Macklemore, to be honest. He’s been pro-Palestine for the last few years and it’s not just words — he seems to really get it. I don’t know how Ed Sheeran would not have known [his stance] given all that Macklemore has done over the past three years, and the fact that he wrote a song called ‘Hind’s Hall.’ I never thought that if hip hop stood up for Palestine it would be a white dude from Seattle or wherever he’s from, but I’m glad that he did.”

Debates around Macklemore intensified after his performance at Sheeran’s New Jersey concerts in September. Macklemore used the platform to chant slogans like “Free Palestine,” condemning the conflict. He also performed their protest song “Hind’s Hall” at the show. Consequently, he was removed from the line-up.

The dispute has become a flashpoint in Hollywood’s wider culture clash over Israel and Palestine. It also harkens to issues around political activism, free speech and the influence of wealthy entertainment figures. Macklemore’s use of his platform to advocate the cause of the Palestinians triggered debates.

He also exposed concerns about whether artists can express pro-Palestinian views without facing professional consequences. Najla’s comments added fuel to the fire, as they highlighted the tension between celebrity influence, political solidarity, and the power of industry insiders.

Najla’s comments come as she promotes “Edward Said: Between Worlds”, a documentary about her father’s life and advocacy for Palestinian human rights. The controversy highlights a growing divide in the entertainment industry over how celebrities express their political views and whether artists face pressure over their support for pro-Palestinian causes. The dispute has sparked wider discussions about activism and influence in the entertainment world.
