Matthew McConaughey Has Hilarious Reason for Dodging DNA Test With Woody Harrelson

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have long joked about a possible family connection. Now, the two actors have taken that idea into their new comedy, Brothers. Their friendship makes the story even more fun. However, McConaughey still has doubts about finding out the truth.

Matthew McConaughey explains his hesitation over a DNA test with Woody Harrelson

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actors discussed the DNA test at the Los Angeles premiere of Brothers on Thursday. Harrelson said he wants to take one, but McConaughey keeps refusing. “I’ve been wanting to but he refuses,” Harrelson said. McConaughey then admitted, “I’ll probably come around to it.”

McConaughey also explained what gets him hesitant. “If it’s true, I got a lot to unpack,” he said. The actor then joked about what could happen if the test turns out that they are not brothers. “If it’s not true, he’s not gonna be near as fun to hang out with,” McConaughey added.

Harrelson admitted that he would take the result hard if it proved the theory wrong. “I’m going to be really sad for a while if it’s not true,” he said. McConaughey then joked that Harrelson’s feelings give him another reason to delay the test. “Let’s just keep floating this idea, because I don’t want him being all upset,” he said.

Harrelson remains convinced that they share a family connection. “I don’t think that’s going to be a problem because I think we’re brothers,” he said. McConaughey made his own position clear, replying, “He’s fully convinced, I’m not.” The real-life question also drives Brothers, where the actors play versions of themselves who discover they may be brothers.

McConaughey said his mother once told him she knew Harrelson’s father around the time he was conceived. That revelation raised the possibility that the two longtime friends could share a father. For now, Harrelson wants answers, while McConaughey seems content to leave the question open.
