Following nearly three decades of playing Gale Weathers, Courteney Cox has her sights set on directing a Scream movie. The 62-year-old actress feels she could be the right person to lead the next installment, having appeared in all seven films in the franchise.
Courteney Cox wants to direct a future ‘Scream’ movie after decades as Gale Weathers
Her latest project as a director, Evil Genius, recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. During a conversation with Deadline about her new film, Cox was asked if she would be interested in directing a Scream installment. She replied, “I think I should, honestly. Nobody knows more about that movie than I do. I mean, and the creator, and Wes Craven, and the writers, and everybody who’s been in it. But I think it’d be great and fun and a good publicity thing. Get on it.”
Cox’s character, created by Kevin Williamson, made her debut in the original Scream in 1996. She later returned for all six sequels, including Scream 2 in 1997, Scream 3 in 2000, Scream 4 in 2011, Scream in 2022, Scream VI in 2023, and Scream 7 in 2026.
The development of Scream 8 was revealed in April, with a team of writers hired to work on it. The announcement came after the huge success of Scream 7, which became the franchise’s highest-grossing film. The film collected more than $207 million at the global box office during its theatrical release. It was also the first installment in the franchise to receive an IMAX theatrical release. Neve Campbell also reprised her role as Sidney Prescott in Scream 7. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Zuckerman sisters, Lilla and Nora, will take on writing duties for the upcoming eighth installment. Spyglass Media is developing the eighth installment of the Scream franchise.
