‘Game of Thrones’ Star Trades Iron Throne for Secret Agent Role

Emilia Clarke is preparing to take on a very different role from her Game of Thrones character as she joins the National Theatre production of Plenty.

The actress is set to make her National Theatre debut in David Hare’s play, which explores the aftermath of World War II through former secret agent Susan Traherne.

Emilia Clarke stars as a former secret agent navigating postwar disillusion in ‘Plenty’

Clarke will take the lead role in Plenty, which is scheduled to begin performances at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton Theatre in spring 2027.

Former National Theatre director Richard Eyre will direct the production.

The play follows Susan Traherne, a former secret agent who struggles with disillusionment after World War II.

The new staging will arrive shortly before the play’s 50th anniversary.

For Emilia Clarke, the role marks another major step in her stage career.

She previously made her West End debut in 2022. Clarke played Nina in a modern production of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull.

Jamie Lloyd directed that production.

Clarke became best known for playing Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones. Her upcoming role in Plenty moves her away from fantasy and into a story centered on espionage and postwar life.

The production will also bring one of David Hare’s major works back to audiences ahead of its milestone anniversary.

The National Theatre has not yet announced the full cast or the complete creative team.

Specific performance dates also remain unconfirmed at the time of the announcement.

Still, Clarke’s casting places her at the center of the upcoming revival as Susan Traherne.

Her appearance in Plenty will also mark her first performance at the National Theatre after her earlier West End work.

With Eyre directing and Clarke leading the cast, the production is set to bring Hare’s postwar drama back to the London stage in 2027.
