Chris Rock has made it clear that he does not feel a strong need to return to the Oscars. The comedian recently reflected on his infamous moment at the 2022 Academy Awards. He also shared whether he would ever host or attend the ceremony again. For now, Rock seems ready to leave that chapter behind.
Chris Rock says his Oscars hosting days may have passed and reveals the one circumstance that could bring him back
In a new interview with Variety, Rock looked back at Will Smith slapping him onstage during the 2022 Oscars. Smith struck Rock after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith. Rock said that he wished the incident had never happened four years later. However, he did not want the conversation to take attention away from his new movie, “Misty Green.”
Rock stars in, wrote, and directed “Misty Green.” He complimented Rosalind Green and remarked, “I wish nothing would have happened.” Rock then put the incident into perspective. “It’s a crazy world,” he said, adding that “me having a bad day is not the biggest — it’s not that important.”
Rock also discussed the possibility of hosting the Oscars again. He previously hosted the ceremony in 2005 and 2016. “I’m not going to say never, but my time might have passed, honestly,” he told the outlet. He also praised current awards show hosts, calling Conan O’Brien “amazing” and Nikki Glaser “amazing on the Golden Globes.”
As for attending another Oscars ceremony, Rock said he has one condition. “The only way I’ll go back is if I’m nominated, and I’m not getting nominated,” he said. “And that’s OK. We’ll deal with that if it happens. Like, let’s manage expectations.” For now, it seems Rock has no plans to return to the Oscars stage anytime soon.
