Prince Harry’s security battle took another dramatic turn after Buckingham Palace issued an unexpected letter. The timing raised suspicions among his camp because officials were preparing to review his family’s security arrangements.
Harry and Meghan Markle had been settling into their new British home while preparing Archie and Lilibet for school. Instead, the Palace letter added fresh tension just as RAVEC prepared to reconsider their protection.
Prince Harry’s camp reportedly suspects the Palace letter could affect his security decision
According to ITV News, Buckingham Palace released guidance clarifying that Harry and Meghan remained private citizens. The letter arrived just before a meeting about their security, creating questions about its timing. Palace sources said the letter simply clarified the Sussexes’ status following their UK return. However, Harry’s camp reportedly suspected it could influence the security review.
RAVEC, the Home Office committee handling royal protection, was due to reassess the Sussexes’ circumstances. Their return meant their home and their children’s school were now in Britain.
The committee was also expected to consider whether security should extend to Meghan, Archie and Lilibet. They had previously been excluded from Harry’s official arrangements. Harry’s team reportedly viewed his current protection as inadequate. His existing provision amounted to access to a police liaison officer rather than a permanent physical presence.
The Duke of Sussex wanted police protection for his family similar to arrangements available to former prime ministers. His argument rested partly on his royal position and military history. Harry remained fifth in line to the throne, while Archie and Lilibet were sixth and seventh. He also believed his Army service in Afghanistan made genuine security concerns unavoidable.
The Palace letter also appeared to complicate Harry’s relationship with King Charles. Relations between father and son had reportedly improved after months of thawing. Harry had not publicly responded to the letter. However, his office confirmed that the Sussexes received it only about an hour before publication.
That detail made the announcement particularly surprising for Harry and his team. The security review therefore unfolded under an increasingly awkward royal spotlight. For now, RAVEC remained responsible for deciding whether Harry’s protection should change. The Palace letter did not settle that question, but its timing certainly added intrigue.
