George Clooney is weighing in on Mark Ruffalo’s increasingly public clash with Paramount. However, Clooney is focusing less on the specific dispute and more on an issue he believes Hollywood must protect. The Oscar winner says people should retain the right to voice their opinions even when others strongly disagree. Meanwhile, he also has concerns about Paramount’s proposed Warner Bros. Discovery deal.
George Clooney says free speech must be protected
Speaking at the Venice Film Festival, Clooney addressed the Paramount feud during a press conference. He said, “I support Mark Ruffalo’s ability to speak freely.” In fact, Clooney made clear that agreement was not the point. “I believe in free speech even when I completely disagree with it,” he added.
Mark Ruffalo has strongly opposed Paramount’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. Earlier this year, he also claimed some Hollywood stars feared speaking out against the deal. More recently, the dispute intensified after Ruffalo criticized Oracle and the Ellison family. Paramount then accused him of invoking “antisemitic tropes” during a business dispute.
However, Ruffalo rejected that characterization and called the accusation “appalling and fundamentally dishonest.” His response to Paramount argued that criticizing political actions and corporate ties does not amount to attacking Jewish people.
Meanwhile, other Hollywood figures have entered the debate. Jane Fonda, for example, defended Ruffalo’s right to speak and criticized efforts to discredit his opposition to the deal. Clooney also questioned the economics of the proposed merger. In addition, he expressed concern that major corporate consolidation could cost entertainment workers their jobs.
Still, his comments centered on free speech rather than an endorsement of Ruffalo’s specific claims. For Clooney, disagreement does not justify silencing someone during a heated corporate and political debate.
