Viola Davis says the costume controversy reflects a painful history of racist imagery
Recently, a post shared by the Fauxmoi community on Reddit highlighted Viola Davis rejecting Target’s apology. The EGOT winner said she did not accept the apology and questioned whether the corporation truly understood the impact, pain and dehumanization caused by the imagery.
Davis said, “Target, I do not accept your apology, and I do not believe that you understand the impact… the pain… the dehumanization of the above.”
“These images laid the foundation and the ideology for every atrocity that has been committed against my people. We MATTER!! You have shown us that you are not on OUR side,” Viola Davis added
Recently, Target launched its $25 “Kids’ Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume,” featuring a Black child as the model in its promotional imagery.
The campaign sparked widespread backlash on social media, with critics saying the costume and imagery evoked racist blackface and minstrel-show caricatures. Following the criticism, Target pulled the costume from sale and issued an apology.
Corporation wrote, “As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry. especially hurtful for our Black guests, team members and partners.”
This is not the first time Target has faced backlash over a product launch. A similar controversy erupted in 2023, although that time it centered on the LGBTQ+ community.
In May 2023, Target launched its annual LGBTQ+ Pride Month merchandise collection, which triggered a backlash from anti-LGBTQ+ groups. The controversy escalated into harassment and threats against Target employees, while boycott campaigns also began circulating online.
When it comes to Viola Davis, Target’s recent controversy is not the only issue she has spoken out about. The 61-year-old actress has previously shared her views on pay inequality in Hollywood and the lack of diversity and opportunities for people of color in the film industry.
