SNL Fan-Favorite Cheri Oteri Didn’t Feel She Deserved Her Breast Cancer ‘Win’

Cheri Oteri is reflecting on a breast cancer milestone that brought both relief and unexpected guilt. The former Saturday Night Live cast member recently finished radiation and marked the moment by ringing the treatment bell. Still, the SNL alum admitted that celebrating did not feel simple at first. A close friend eventually helped her understand why the moment counted as a win.

Cheri Oteri reflects on finishing breast cancer treatment and ringing the bell

In a new People interview, Oteri looked back on completing her 20th and final radiation session on Aug. 4. The Cheri Oteri breast cancer journey began after a routine mammogram led to a February diagnosis of stage 0 ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS.

After treatment, Oteri rang the bell four times. She had already shared the emotional moment on Instagram and said she felt healthy and grateful.

However, the celebration brought an unexpected reaction once she returned home. Oteri said she “almost felt not deserving” because she believed she had not suffered enough to ring the bell.

She turned to longtime friend Camryn Manheim, who challenged that thinking. Manheim reminded her that everyone experiences suffering differently and told her, “You had a win.”

That conversation helped Oteri embrace the milestone. She told People she now feels grateful for the experience and proud of how she handled it.

The Cheri Oteri cancer recovery comes during a busy career stretch. She recently appeared on Happy’s Place with Reba McEntire, who checked on her during the People interview.

Meanwhile, Oteri is filming Grown Ups 3 with Adam Sandler. She said she has been having “so much fun” on the movie set as work picks up again.

Oteri first became a fan favorite during her 1995-2000 run on Saturday Night Live. Earlier this month, her bell-ringing update also drew supportive messages from friends and fans.

Now, Oteri is trying to celebrate what is going right instead of expecting something to go wrong. For her, ringing that bell became part of learning to accept the win.
