Dane Cook Lost Millions in a Betrayal He Never Saw Coming

Comedian Dane Cook has opened up about the shocking financial betrayal involving his half-brother, Darryl McCauley, who also served as Cook’s business manager. McCauley was responsible for managing the comedian’s finances. He allegedly made massive withdrawals from Cook’s accounts, including transactions of up to $100,000.

Cook’s account of the financial betrayal is explored in the upcoming documentary Funny Money: The Dane Cook Story. It chronicles the comedian’s rise to fame and the events that followed. The film also examines the personal and financial betrayal that contributed to his downfall. Brett Harvey directed the documentary, which is scheduled for release on September 29.

The documentary trailer opens with mysterious audio from a phone call involving McCauley, reports People. McCauley can be heard addressing his brother in the trailer, saying, “Dane, it’s your brother.” He then asks, “The FBI is involved with something? Dane, what happened? What have you done?”

Family videos of Cook and McCauley follow in the trailer. Cook reflects on his half-brother in a voiceover, saying he “spent so much time pretending to be something he wasn’t.” He adds, “From the moment he left that bank, my brother disappeared.”

The brothers shared a passion for stand-up comedy. As Cook’s career soared, McCauley stayed by his side and supported his rise. But Cook says he began to sense that something was wrong and eventually started questioning where the missing money was going.

McCauley managed Cook’s finances from the 1990s through 2008. Records later showed that he withdrew large amounts of money from his brother’s account, including sums of up to $100,000 at a time. In 2008, the former corrections officer was arrested over allegations that he stole $12 million from Cook while managing his finances.

In 2010, McCauley pleaded guilty to charges of larceny, embezzlement, and forgery. He received a five- to six-year prison sentence. The court also ordered him to repay the $12 million to Cook. Erika, McCauley’s wife, received a two-and-a-half-year sentence in connection with the case.
