Melissa Joan Hart has revealed that she is stepping away from HGTV’s new ’90s-themed competition, Totally ’90s House. The Sabrina the Teenage Witch star is seen telling her team that she has to “step away for a little while” in the show’s trailer. Her sudden exit makes room for her former Melissa & Joey costar, Joey Lawrence, to join the competition. The show premieres on August 26.

The new HGTV show brings together some of the biggest stars from ’90s TV for a very different kind of challenge: turning outdated homes into modern spaces without losing their throwback charm.
Hart is teamed up with Boy Meets World’s Matthew Lawrence and The Cosby Show alum Keshia Knight Pulliam. On the other side are Beverly Hills, 90210 star Brian Austin Green, 7th Heaven’s Beverley Mitchell and Full House favorite Jodie Sweetin, according to Us.
But host Jaleel White warns viewers that something major is coming.
“And something so shocking [takes place] that one team will never be the same,” he teases in the trailer.
That something appears to be Hart’s sudden departure.
While the reason for her exit isn’t revealed in the trailer, Joey steps in and joins his brother Matthew and Pulliam, giving the competition a new lineup.
The teams will travel across the country looking for homes that seem stuck in the 1990s. They will then give those spaces a major makeover with help from mentors Carter Oosterhouse and Sabrina Soto. The goal is to create the perfect ’90s-inspired home while keeping some of that nostalgic magic alive. The winning team will also get bragging rights and $25,000 for their chosen charity.
And it won’t all be serious renovation work.
The trailer shows the stars having plenty of fun, including a prank war between the teams. Several familiar HGTV faces will also help judge the makeovers, including Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt, Drew Lachey, Mina Starsiak Hawk, Paige Davis and Jonathan Adler.
Totally ’90s House premieres Wednesday, August 26, at 9 p.m. ET on HGTV. New episodes will stream the following day on HBO Max.
