Julie Andrews on Princess Diaries 3: ‘Too Late For Me To Do It’

Julie Andrews has confirmed that she will not return for The Princess Diaries 3. The 90-year-old actress shared the update during an interview. Andrews starred as Queen Clarisse Renaldi in the first two movies. She explained why she feels it is time for the story to move on.

Julie Andrews confirmed she won’t reprise her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi

Andrews starred with Anne Hathaway in 2001’s The Princess Diaries and 2004’s The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. In an interview with TODAY.com, when asked about the third film, Andrews said, “I’m not going to be in it.” She added, “I think the story is slightly different, and I’m not quite sure how they’re dealing with that.” Andrews said, “But it’s too late for me to do it.”

Andrews also said why she thinks the tale should go on without her. “I think the story has to continue in Princess Mia,” she said. It’s her story, it’s not really mine. Recently, Hathaway revealed that the team had a story breakthrough and were quite happy about the new direction of the script. However, her pregnancy with her third child has made the timing for filming unclear.

Andrews had previously mentioned a potential return in 2022 and 2024. In 2022, she said she was unsure where a third movie could go because so many years had passed. In 2024, she said, “Sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone,” although she added that she would be happy if another film happened. In June, Meg Cabot said that she had read an early script, and that it was “amazing.”

The third film has Adele Lim attached to direct, while it remains unclear which other characters will return. Chris Pine has talked about his return, and Robert Schwartzman spoke to PEOPLE in 2025, saying he had “early” talks about the franchise. Andrews will instead appear in a Disney documentary next year. She also continues her work as Lady Whistledown on Bridgerton and recently released the children’s book Shy with her daughter Emma Walton.
