Earlier this week, Clark said the issue of transgender athletes in women’s sports should be handled by leagues and governing bodies. She stated she’s concentrating on competing at the highest level and handling the inquiries that accompany her platform. Sometimes, it’s your job, Clark said. “And then sometimes, you know, you want to keep the focus on basketball.” In her latest remarks, she did not elaborate on the controversial subject.
Clark’s teammate Sophie Cunningham took the discussion to the next level when she spoke about her opinion on the matter. Cunningham, 29, told ESPN that she received criticism after speaking about the topic. “I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans,” Cunningham said. She said, “I never said that,” and she wanted to come at the conversation with love and honesty.
Cunningham’s comments led to reactions from supporters and critics around the Fever’s game against the Minnesota Lynx. She posed with Riley Gaines after the game, while Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve wore a “Trans Kids Belong” shirt.
