Sen. Ted Cruz weighed in on the debate surrounding transgender athletes in women’s sports while also defending Caitlin Clark‘s decision to avoid commenting on the issue. His remarks quickly sparked fresh discussion over fairness in youth sports and gender identity.
Cruz praised Caitlin Clark before debating transgender athletes and challenging a TMZ reporter over the issue
According to TMZ, Cruz spoke with the outlet on Capitol Hill after commentator Megyn Kelly criticized Clark. Kelly had called Clark a “coward” for not taking a public position after one of her Indiana Fever teammates said young girls should not have to compete against transgender girls.
Cruz first praised Clark’s basketball talent before discussing the issue. He said she was “a hell of a ball player” and that players shouldn’t be expected to comment on every big political issue.
The discussion then turned to Cruz’s views on transgender athletes. He argued that transgender women should not compete against biological women in women’s sports. Cruz also fired a question at the TMZ reporter, asking if it was fair for LeBron James to play in the WNBA. He then asked the reporter if he knew the difference between boys and girls.
The conversation then shifted to transgender children and school sports. The TMZ reporter asked if transgender children should play sports with their friends. Cruz said children should socialise and enjoy life. He also claimed that left-wing adults push politics onto children and influence them to transition.
The reporter responded by suggesting that some parents support their children’s identities. Cruz then wrapped it up with a personal comment directed at the reporter. He said, “If you don’t know what a boy is and you don’t know what a girl is, there’s a reason you work at TMZ.”
