Snapchat is updating its content policies about how content can exist on its platform while targeting AI-generated videos. The platform confirmed it will ban fully AI-generated videos on the Spotlight.
Snapchat’s updated rules target AI-generated videos appearing on its Spotlight platform
Snapchat’s official team stated that they are going to ban AI-generated videos from the Spotlight and will feature original content from creators.
The company statement read, “As low-quality, repetitive, AI-generated content becomes increasingly common across the internet, we want Spotlight to remain a place where people can discover authentic creativity from real people, because we believe there’s enduring value in rewarding original perspectives, personal storytelling, and the moments that people choose to create and share themselves.”
However, AI is not completely banned; creators can use AI tools to enhance their creativity and editing. They cannot post fully AI-generated videos on Spotlight, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Creators who have “enhanced or edited using Snapchat’s AI creative tools” will remain eligible for Spotlight. The company added, “For some, AI plays an important part of the creative process, and we believe it can unlock incredible new forms of expression.”
The aim of the crackdown is to reduce AI-generated prompt-based videos that are widely available on the internet. The platform wants creators and viewers to have original content rather than a large amount of AI videos.
Last year, YouTube tightened its rules on AI-generated videos. Creators can monetize the AI-generated videos provided they include meaningful human input. However, Meta has been more open to AI-generated content on Facebook and Instagram. Snapchat is limiting fully AI-generated content while retaining authentic creator-led content for the users.
The company is betting that most users will prefer human-led content. The platform has 483 million active users, while 956 million are monthly active users. The update comes as social media platforms are flooded with AI-generated content, raising concerns over originality.
