Fantom Events, a publishing and events company he worked with, confirmed the news in a social media post Monday. Reports of Tom Chadbon’s death at 80 spread over the weekend. Fans and former colleagues paid tribute to the Game of Thrones actor Tom Chadbon.
“We are sorry to hear the news that Tom Chadbon passed away last weekend,” the statement read. “Tom was a familiar face to many from his numerous television and film credits, including ‘Doctor Who,’ ‘James Bond’ and ‘Game of Thrones.” The company added, “He was always a warm and friendly man to work with, and we send our condolences to his family at this sad time.”
Born in Luton, Bedfordshire, Chadbon worked steadily in television for close to 50 years and became a recognizable face on British screens. He also stepped into the “James Bond” world with a role in Daniel Craig’s first outing, “Casino Royale.”
One of his most memorable turns came opposite Tom Baker in the 1979 “Doctor Who” story “City of Death.” That episode pulled in more than 16 million viewers and still stands as the series most-watched to this day. He came back to the franchise years later, playing Merdeen in the 1986 serial “The Trial of a Time Lord.”
His last on-screen role came in 2017, when he played High Septon Maynard in the Season 7 finale of “Game of Thrones.” Off-screen, Chadbon married twice. He wed Deborah Elspeth Leathers in July 1966. The couple welcomed two sons, Dominic Thomas Chadbon and Nicholas Richard Chadbon, before splitting in 1970.
In 1971, he married Jane Hennessy, and the pair stayed together until his death, largely out of the public eye. News of Tom Chadbon’s death has moved fans and fellow actors to revisit a body of work that ran from science fiction to fantasy.
