Bret Michaels Forced to Pause Tour Following Emergency Surgery

Bret Michaels postponed his tour dates after undergoing emergency surgery for a complicated kidney stone. The Poison frontman was reportedly instructed to take three to four weeks off while recovering. He said he hoped to return to the road in late August if his recovery went well.

Bret Michaels is taking several weeks off after undergoing emergency kidney stone surgery

A press release shared on Michaels’ official website revealed details about his recent surgery. The singer reportedly experienced severe kidney pain following his July 18 performance in Spokane, Washington. He was diagnosed with a complicated obstructing kidney stone the following day.

Michaels later revealed that the kidney stone had caused intense pain for nearly seven days. He said the stone would not pass despite performing through the discomfort. The rocker ultimately required surgery after the pain became too severe.

His physician, Abby Borhan, M.D., successfully placed a ureteral stent during the procedure. Michaels was reportedly instructed to avoid performing for three to four weeks. He was also limited to light physical activity during his recovery.

Borhan explained that the stent could cause significant internal friction and physical discomfort. She also said Michaels faced additional health concerns that could complicate his recovery. The demanding nature of touring reportedly made returning immediately unsafe.

Michaels’ recovery was also affected by his lifelong Type 1 diabetes diagnosis. Borhan said the condition increased his risk of serious infection while the stent remained. She emphasized that touring could interfere with hydration, rest, and blood glucose management.

Michaels shared his gratitude for the medical professionals caring for him throughout his recovery. “I’m forever grateful for the amazing medical treatment and ongoing medical attention throughout my personal life and career,” Michaels said. He added that he hoped to return to the road in late August with his usual energy.

The Poison frontman has not announced a confirmed return date for his postponed performances. His recovery will determine when he can safely resume his demanding schedule. Fans will likely have to wait for further updates about his upcoming shows.
