Zach Cregger, the ‘Resident Evil’ director, shared an incident from the set. He said Austin Abrams nearly died while filming one of the crucial scenes. The director recalled the frightening moment that happened while the crew was filming practical effects.
Austin Abrams came within inches of disaster on the Resident Evil set
Resident Evil, the upcoming survival horror film, was as scary on the set as it reportedly is in the film. The movie director, Cregger, opened up about a frightening experience while filming as he spoke about actor Austin Abrams.
According to SlashFilm, Cregger was searching for an alternative to VFX to create scenes with practical effects when the incident occurred.
He said, “And so, we had to basically design this thing where he’s just running, and bodies are just falling and detonating all around him. And I knew I didn’t want to do it with VFX because I feel like it would just look like VFX.”
“So, I was like, ‘How do we do this where all these explosions are real?” he added. They used “body-sized blood bags” to choreograph the scene that was briefly shown in the trailer.
He recalled how one of the blood bags nearly fell when Abrams was filming a scene. “It would’ve killed him. If he had been one step to the right, he would’ve died. [The shot is] in the movie, so it’s f—ing worth it. I was pretty stunned,” the director said.
“That’s what’s so great about making movies is you have this scene, you have this amazing idea in your head, and then you just have all these people help you realize that idea and immortalize it on the screen. And there’s a real sense of teamwork and accomplishment. I’m very proud of this movie. I feel like I grew a lot making it, just as a filmmaker,” he continued.
Resident Evil features Austin Abrams, Paul Walter Hauser, Kali Reis, Zach Cherry, and Johnno Wilson. The film is set to release in theatres on September 18, 2026.
