The FBI is examining threats tied to the investigation into the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, according to a senior Mississippi official. Tate Reeves, the governor of Mississippi, has also entered the dispute, accusing two nationally known civil rights figures of fueling division around the case.
Tate Reeves blames outside activists for escalating the Nolan Wells case
Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell said the FBI was taking a “serious look” at threats against public officials, possible witnesses, people connected to the investigation, and members of Wells’ family. During an interview on Mississippi Public Broadcasting’s “The Sit Down,” he said false information had stirred “rage and emotion” and led to direct threats.
Wells disappeared July 4 after traveling with friends to Horn Island off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. A National Park Service ranger found his body on July 6. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office remains the lead agency investigating his death. The FBI is assisting with parts of the case and examining interstate threats against people connected to it.
Reeves blamed attorney Ben Crump and civil rights leader Al Sharpton for the escalating hostility. In a statement to Fox News Digital, the Mississippi governor accused them of “stoking division for personal gain” and said they were responsible for the threats. However, Reeves did not provide evidence directly linking either man’s public comments to specific threats.
Crump represents Wells’ family and has questioned the initial account of the teenager’s final hours. He recently discussed an independent autopsy that did not establish a cause or manner of death. Sharpton officiated Wells’ funeral and joined Tyler Perry in offering reward money for information that could help determine what happened.
Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch also warned against attempts to intimidate investigators or interfere with the legal process. She said her office would take threats against law enforcement and prosecutors seriously.
The FBI’s involvement does not mean it has taken over the death investigation. State and local authorities remain in charge, while federal officials assist where their tools and jurisdiction apply.
The latest update involving Tate Reeves and Nolan Wells adds a political dispute to an already sensitive investigation. For now, the threats remain under review, and officials have not announced Wells’ cause of death.
