Musk addressed accusations of racism during an interview with The Economist. When asked about the allegations, he argued that his personal relationships contradicted the claims. “My partner is half Indian, and I have four children with her,” Musk said. He also noted that one of their sons was named after an Indian physicist.
Musk appeared to reference his son Strider Sekhar Sirius in the interview. The child’s middle name reportedly honours Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, an Indian-American physicist. He continued defending himself, discussing the people working at his companies. Musk claimed his businesses have senior executives representing different racial backgrounds.
Musk’s comments quickly drew criticism from some users on X. Several argued that relationships with people from different backgrounds do not automatically disprove racism. One critic compared Musk’s argument to the familiar “I have a Black friend” defence. Others felt that personal relationships cannot determine whether someone holds racist views.
Musk has previously made controversial comments about race and demographics. His statements have frequently sparked heated debates among supporters and critics online. The billionaire has also accused American institutions and media organisations of racism. He previously claimed that certain institutions discriminate against white and Asian people.
Shivon Zilis previously worked at OpenAI, where she reportedly interacted with Musk. She later left the company and continued her professional career elsewhere. Musk and Zilis have four children together. Their family has attracted public attention because of Musk’s prominent profile and Zilis’ background in technology.
Musk’s latest comments have once again brought his views on race into public discussion. His explanation has sparked criticism, with some questioning whether his reasoning addresses the accusations against him.
