Malcolm-Jamal Warner‘s widow, Tenisha Warner, recently opened up about grief and motherhood. Her interview with Gayle King was recorded before her lawsuit against Pamela Warner became public. However, her comments about family dynamics later gained new significance.

During a preview of her CBS Mornings interview, Tenisha spoke about losing her husband. She also discussed raising their nine-year-old daughter while navigating life after his death. The conversation was recorded before details of the family’s legal dispute emerged.
King asked Tenisha whether she remained close with Malcolm’s mother, Pamela. Tenisha did not directly answer the question about their relationship. Instead, she explained that her emotional energy was focused on her daughter and herself.
“Right now, everybody – all of his family members and everyone who has lost him – they are grieving,” Tenisha said. She continued by explaining that her emotional capacity could sometimes be limited. Her comments appeared to suggest that she had been carefully managing her relationships during grief.
Tenisha also explained how she decided where to direct her remaining energy. “Whatever I have to give, the first person to get that is my daughter,” she said. “And then the second is myself.” Her response gave insight into her priorities as she adjusted to becoming a single mother.
After the preview aired, King clarified that the interview team knew nothing about the lawsuit. She said her question about Pamela had been asked because Malcolm’s mother had spoken publicly about her son’s death. King later said Tenisha’s answer had stood out to her.
The legal dispute became public shortly before the interview aired. Tenisha reportedly filed lawsuits in Georgia and California seeking more than $1.2 million. The claims involved alleged financial obligations connected to Malcolm’s estate and family trust.
Malcolm died in an accidental drowning in Costa Rica in July 2025. He was 54 years old. Tenisha’s full interview with King was scheduled to air on July 23.
