New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has rejected a proposed salary increase after the City Council approved a pay hike for top officials. The 34-year-old mayor said he does not plan to accept the extra money. Mamdani said New Yorkers have bigger concerns than the mayor’s salary.
His decision aligns with his efforts to reduce government spending and promote affordable housing initiatives.
Zohran Mamdani explains why he declined a huge pay raise
The salary changes were approved by the New York City Council on Thursday, July 16, with a vote of 42-6. The plan raised the annual salary of council members from $164,500 to $175,500. It also raised the mayor’s salary from $258,750 to $305,800. The rise would have added an extra $47,050 per year to Mamdani’s income.
Mamdani rejected the raise during a news conference after the vote. During the discussions, he said, “I will not accept a pay raise.” He also cracked a joke that no New Yorker has ever told him, the mayor makes too little. He added that the pay raise would not improve the lives of New Yorkers.
New York City officials have not received a raise since 2016. Supporters of the measure argued that inflation and rising costs have increased expenses by more than 30% since 2016. Many government officials across the country face criticism when they vote on their own salaries. Some lawmakers go years without receiving a salary change because of public concerns.
According to Business Insider, data show that Mamdani already makes more than any U.S. governor. The mayor oversees a city with a population larger than 39 states and manages a major city budget. But he said his attention is on programs that can assist New Yorkers under financial strain. The decision is consistent with his campaign promise to reduce unnecessary government spending.
On the same day, Mamdani presented new policy ideas related to his proposals for affordable housing. He spoke about stronger measures on deceptive practices by landlords. He also highlighted efforts to improve tenant protections across New York City.
