NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Gets Pulled Into Jay-Z’s Yankee Stadium Delay

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the Jay-Z concert delay at Yankee Stadium. He revealed that he’s aware of the inconvenience caused to the ticket holders and will look into the matter. These remarks come after Jay Z’s show, which was supposed to start at 8:00 pm, commenced at 12:17 a.m., as some non-ticket holders rushed into the venue’s entrance.

The mayor addressed ticketless fans, closed entrances, and the delayed Jay-Z concert

On Monday, Mamdani spoke about the security breach at the Jay Z concert at Yankee Stadium. He said, “Last night is something that we’re going to follow up on, because I know that there are many New Yorkers who were delayed after a breach of security by those who didn’t have tickets, and then it resulted in a multiple-hour delay for many others. So, that’s something we’ll follow up on.” While he condemned the security incident, he also praised the NYPD’s immediate response during such a chaotic situation.

Moreover, during a speech at Public Interest Technology (PIT) Crews, Mamdani revealed what one of Jay Z’s albums taught him. He said, “The first album I was ever given was a clean version of The Blueprint, which is unfortunate. I learned about the importance of freedom of expression.”

Meanwhile, Jay Z also took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a video to apologize to fans for the security breach incident. He then went on to explain the delay, stating that 10,000 people were outside and the security closed all the doors. However, somebody tried to rush the door, but the officials made sure to keep it closed to ensure audience safety.

“It’s 10,000 people outside. I don’t want to start music and people get trampled. I’m really sorry for the inconvenience but I had to make sure everybody’s OK,” he concluded (via NBC News).

The New York Yankees, Roc Nation, and Live Nation said that a large group of non-ticket holders “stormed” over those having tickets in a joint statement. They also stated that in some cases, security was breached, too. Therefore, the gates were closed for a long period of time. This was to ensure that only those with proper tickets and access could head inside.
