R. Kelly’s Clemency Bid Sparks Power Struggle Within His Own Camp

R Kelly’s clemency effort has reportedly triggered a dispute among people representing him. Rival groups claimed authority over his prison release campaign. The disagreement emerged after a clemency petition reached President Donald Trump. Conflicting claims have quickly fueled uncertainty surrounding the process.

Rival factions are battling over who controls R. Kelly’s clemency bid

TMZ reports that the disagreement surfaced shortly after Kelly filed his clemency petition. Chicago attorney Beau Brindley has maintained that he continued leading the effort. Atlanta attorney Lela Schmidt disputed that position. Both sides have claimed responsibility for seeking presidential mercy.

Schmidt said she has formally submitted the clemency request to President Trump. She described the petition as a plea for mercy. Schmidt worked with Keith Calbert in the process. Calbert said he held Kelly‘s power of attorney.

Calbert has also challenged Brindley’s public statements about the case. He has claimed that Brindley was not directing Kelly’s clemency campaign. Brindley has rejected these claims. He called Calbert’s claims “unsubstantiated.”

Brindley shared that he had been working on Kelly’s clemency request for years. He pledged to pursue every available option legally. He also argued that Calbert lacked legal authority to represent Kelly. However, Calbert has insisted that his power of attorney remained valid.

This dispute unfolded while Kelly remained imprisoned. He is serving a 31-year combined sentence following federal convictions. The convictions stemmed from separate federal cases in New York and Chicago.

Kelly was convicted of racketeering and other offenses related to child exploitation in the New York case. The Chicago case included child pornography-related convictions. Those rulings are the central cause of his imprisonment.

The clemency petition asks President Trump to reduce Kelly’s sentence or grant him executive clemency. The final decision now solely rests with President Trump. No action has been announced over Kelly’s request.
