In a conversation with TMZ, Cruz opened up about his close friend’s sudden death. While talking about Graham on Capitol Hill, the senator appeared close to tears.
He said, “It was a tragic weekend. Lindsey was one of a kind. I’m shocked and stunned. I think every senator is, we are just.. We are grieving our friend.”
Upon asking about criticism of Graham online, he said, “I don’t care what haters say online. Lindsey was a remarkable man; he served his country for 33 years in the Air Force and 23 years in the Senate. He loved this country.”
“I agreed with Lindsey sometimes, I disagree with him sometimes, but it was from the heart. He was a very close friend. Waking up Sunday morning to the news was just stunning. By any measure, Lindsey Graham is one of the most consequential senators to have ever served this country,” he further added.
Cruz said it will be difficult for him not to see Graham regularly. During the conversation, Ted appeared emotional, remembering his friend.
Lindsey Graham died at 71 after a brief, sudden illness, and his office later released a statement. The statement read, “On Saturday, Graham passed away from a brief and sudden illness. The senator’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period.
Following the statement, politicians from both the liberal and MAGA camps were seen paying tribute to Graham. Donald Trump shared a post on his Truth Social, calling Graham “a true American Patriot.”
He said, “One of the greatest people and senators I have ever known.” During a press briefing, he also shared that he was talking to Graham a few hours before he died. Ted Cruz was one of Lindsey Graham’s closest friends, and Graham’s sudden death has shocked the political world.
