Trump’s Name Officially Lands on Florida Airport After Trademark Move

Donald Trump now has an airport named after him. A Florida law has taken effect, renaming Palm Beach International Airport as President Donald J. Trump International Airport. This move coincides with trademark filings that sparked legal and public debate over the airport’s new identity.

As per a report from NPR, the Palm Beach International Airport’s renaming has come into effect this Thursday. The Federal Aviation Administration has approved the change, making President Donald J. Trump International Airport the official name of the facility.

The airport serves more than eight million passengers annually. It is just a few miles away from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach. As per Eric Trump, the president’s aircraft became the first to land at the airport after the name change took place.

Airport officials have shared that the transition will happen in phases. The signboards, brandings, and public-facing materials will gradually replace the former airport name. The passengers can continue using the airport code “PBI” for booking flights until the International Air Transport Association updates the code on August 18. Officials have emphasized that the change is only for rebranding.

This renaming has received additional attention due to trademark applications linked to the new airport name. Trump’s company, DTTM Operations, previously filed an application covering names including “President Donald J. Trump International Airport” and “Donald J. Trump International Airport.”

Legal experts have questioned whether the trademark could have future implications in terms of commercial opportunities outside the airport operations. The licensing agreement allows the airport to use the name without paying royalties. However, experts have noted that the agreement leaves broader trademark questions.

The renaming has faced criticism from people as well. Two local lawsuits have challenged the renaming decision. Some opponents have argued that airports are traditionally named after former presidents rather than the current one.

Despite this ongoing legal controversy, the new name is now officially in effect. The airport will keep rolling out new branding throughout the coming months.
