Jennifer Grey says her mother, actress Jo Wilder, died at 94 after choosing dignity just days after a lung cancer diagnosis
Grey shared an emotional Instagram tribute on July 8, writing that her mother passed away “by her own choosing, on her own terms, exactly as she lived.”
The actress revealed that Wilder received her lung cancer diagnosis only a week before her death. “True to who she was, she chose grace over fear, understanding that leaving this world with dignity is an honor, not a tragedy,” Grey wrote.
Grey also reflected on her mother’s life before motherhood. She described Wilder as “gorgeous and talented” and recalled that she had once been a promising actress on the New York stage before putting that dream aside to raise Jennifer and her brother, James Katz.
“She used to say she never fully answered that calling; she became a mother instead,” Grey wrote. She added that if Wilder had chosen ambition, “we never would have had the mother we had.”
Grey also honored her mother’s lifelong activism and her Melrose boutique, Wilder Place, saying those passions became other ways for her to make an impact. She ended the tribute by writing, “She was brave and deep. I love you, Mom. Thank you for showing me how to do it all, even this, with grace.”
According to the Mirror, Wilder was known for stage performances in “The Threepenny Opera,” “Peter Pan,” and “Gypsy.” The outlet also noted that Grey recently shared her own health journey, revealing she previously battled thyroid cancer and had undergone additional screenings after inconclusive mammograms.
Several celebrities flooded Grey’s Instagram comments with support. According to Us Weekly, Maggie Wheeler, Julianne Moore, Josh Gad, Lea Thompson, Rachel Zegler, and Grey’s ex-husband Clark Gregg all shared messages of love and condolences.
