Page Six reports that Liz Meriwether, best known for creating New Girl and writing projects including “No Strings Attached”, “The Dropout” and “Dying for Sex”, has joined the creative team adapting Britney Spears’ memoir “The Woman in Me” for the big screen.
She will work alongside director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt, the duo behind Wicked. While Chu and Platt had reportedly begun outlining the screenplay, Meriwether has now been tasked with developing the adaptation further.
The Spears memoir, released in 2023, was a runaway success for publishers Simon & Schuster, featuring as a New York Times best-seller across platforms and selling over 6 million copies worldwide. The memoir is reported to be a raw take on Spears’s life, detailing her rise to teenage stardom, her infamous past relationships, and the dark realities of the conservatorship imposed upon her by the courts and by her parents.
The memoir reignited public interest in Spears’ life and career, particularly her experiences under the conservatorship that ended in 2021. Those events are expected to play a central role in the upcoming film.
The memoir attracted intense interest from major studios and production companies before Universal ultimately secured the film rights. According to Page Six, companies including Netflix, Disney, Warner Bros., Sony, Fox, Shonda Rhimes’ production company, Brad Pitt’s Plan B and Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap were all interested in bringing the story to the screen.
