Wicked Director’s Britney Spears Movie Scores Beloved Writer in Major Update

The upcoming Britney Spears biopic got a major update. The film will be directed by Jon M. Chu best known for helming Wicked and its sequel.

What is the update on the Britney Spears movie?

In a new update from Page Six (via Variety), it has now been revealed that the film will be written by Liz Meriwether, best known for creating New Girl. It’ll be based on Spears’ 2023 memoir “The Woman in Me.” The memoir chronicles Spears’ journey to international stardom, along with shining a light on the public and private challenges she faced on the way. The acclaimed book sold over 1.1 million copies in its first week in the U.S.

In an update shared over a year ago, Chu said that Spears would be “very involved” with the movie. There have been no casting announcements regarding the film at the time of writing. However, actress Emma Roberts has said that it’s her dream to play Spears should she be cast in the role.

The filmmaker is also attached to an adaptation of Oh, the Places You’ll Go! and Hot Wheels. Meriwether previously wrote Dying for Sex, The Dropout, Single Parents, Bless This Mess, and more.

Spears is far from the first person to be the subject of a music star biopic in Hollywood. The Michael Jackson biopic recently rocked theaters worldwide and grossing over $991 million. Director Sam Mendes is currently working on four interconnected biopics on the members of The Beatles.

The Britney Spears biopic currently doesn’t have a release date. The film will be produced by Marc Platt.
