Jesy Nelson Fights Back Tears Over Twins’ Devastating Diagnosis

Jesy Nelson is sharing the moment no parent expects. And it is almost impossible to watch lightly. The former Little Mix singer breaks down in a new look at her Amazon Prime documentary as doctors tell her that her twin daughters, Ocean and Story, have spinal muscular atrophy. For Jesy Nelson, the diagnosis changed everything.

The singer broke down as cameras captured the moment doctors diagnosed her twin daughters with SMA

According to The Independent, the emotional scene appears in Jesy Nelson: Life Changing, which follows the singer as she campaigns to reform newborn screening laws in the U.K. Her advocacy began after her daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, were diagnosed with SMA diagnosis Type 1. In the trailer, a doctor tells Nelson that genetic testing came back positive for spinal muscular atrophy. LBC reported that Nelson then breaks down while trying to process the news.

“I can’t believe this is happening,” she says in the clip. She adds, “I don’t know how we are going to do this. I feel like I’m going to feel heartbroken for the rest of my life.” The Amazon Prime documentary also shows how quickly motherhood changed for Nelson. She says she is “bombarded with hospital appointments” and that her “whole life has changed.”

Muscular Dystrophy UK explains that SMA is a rare genetic condition that causes muscles to weaken and waste over time. It can affect movement, breathing, and swallowing. The charity notes that Type 1 is the most common and severe form, with symptoms usually appearing within a baby’s first six months.

Entertainment Weekly previously reported that Jesy Nelson’s twin daughters were diagnosed after months of appointments and early signs, including reduced leg movement and feeding difficulties. Nelson later said the girls had received treatment and that she believed they would “defy all the odds.”

Now, the documentary turns that private pain into a public campaign. Nelson has urged viewers to understand why early testing matters, saying, “early diagnosis can change EVERYTHING.” It is a heartbreaking story, but also one shaped by a mother’s fight for change.
