Trigger Warning: Sexual Assault
E. Jean Carroll is seeking nearly $5.8 million from Donald Trump after the Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal of a civil verdict against him. On June 30, Carroll’s attorneys asked a federal judge to order Trump to pay the amount a Manhattan jury awarded her after finding him liable for sexual abuse and defamation.
E. Jean Carroll moves forward to collect the $5.8 million judgment after the Supreme Court declined Donald Trump’s appeal
Forbes reports that Trump was ordered in 2023 to pay Carroll $5 million plus interest for defamation and sexual abuse. However, the payment was put on hold while he appealed the ruling, a process that concluded on June 29. According to her attorneys, the amount has now increased to nearly $5,779,783 with interest and should be disbursed as ordered by the court, states OK! Magazine.
Carroll, a former magazine columnist who is now 82, has alleged that Trump sexually assaulted her in the 1990s in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room, an allegation he has consistently denied. When she went public in 2019, Trump dismissed her claims and said she was not “his type,” prompting her to sue him for defamation.
Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, wrote, as per ABC7 News, “[A]fter four years of litigation across every level of the federal court system, it is time for this case to end. And under the Court’s Stipulation and Order, Carroll is now entitled to obtain payment of the money due under the judgment.” Kaplan further requested a response from Trump within seven days, by July 7.
According to Al Jazeera, Carroll also filed a second civil suit in 2022 alleging defamation and battery under New York’s Adult Survivors Act. Trump subsequently dismissed her accusations as a “scam” and “hoax.” In this case, which concluded in January 2024, a jury awarded Carroll $83.3 million in damages.
