John Oliver is set to make a guest appearance on General Hospital. The Emmy-winning host of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver will appear in three episodes of the ABC daytime drama, airing on July 2, July 3, and July 6.
John Oliver lands a role in General Hospital
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oliver secured the guest role after requesting a spot on a daytime soap during the March 8 episode of Last Week Tonight. Pointing to Stephen A. Smith’s recurring appearances on General Hospital, Oliver said, “To all the soap operas out there, let me say this: I am officially offering myself to you. Write me a role, and I will be on your set so fast, it will make your head spin.”
The 49-year-old said he’d rather play a character with a “ridiculous” name than appear as himself, adding that he wanted to do “something juicy,” like commit a murder, slap someone, get slapped, or be “someone’s long-lost something.”
Speaking about Oliver joining the show, General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini said in a press release, as per People, “When John Oliver publicly threw down the gauntlet and said he wanted to appear on a soap, we didn’t hesitate for a second.” He further stated, “He was everything you’d hope he’d be: prepared, professional, funny, and genuinely kind to everyone on set. He plays an integral character in the story, and I can’t wait for fans to see who he crosses paths with in Port Charles.”
Oliver, known for his political commentary and 32-time Emmy-winning satirical news show, will make his General Hospital debut in July. Reflecting on the experience, he joked, “General Hospital was everything I hoped it would be. It’s a true honor to be a small stain on the history of this illustrious show.”
General Hospital has a long history of featuring unexpected guest stars, including rock icon Rick Springfield and Oscar-winning Elizabeth Taylor. The show began airing on ABC 63 years ago, making it the longest-running scripted US drama, reports Independent. Meanwhile, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is currently airing its 13th season on HBO.
