The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has officially issued a formal caution to a former employee of the London Clinic for the deliberate misuse of Princess Kate Middleton’s private medical information for personal gain.
The security breach originally surfaced in 2024 when the Princess of Wales was admitted for a 13-day stay following major abdominal surgery.
A London Clinic staff member allegedly attempted to profit from Kate Middleton’s patient records
The ICO launched an investigation when the London Clinic reported a data breach in March 2024. One staff member has reportedly attempted to access Middleton’s medical files to deliver them to a third party for profit. The ICO has revealed that the action taken against the former staff member was completely warranted.
While the reports initially flagged the breach as an act of curiosity, the ICO investigation revealed a deliberate breach for third-party use. “The conduct involved the deliberate misuse of highly sensitive personal information and an offer to disclose it for financial gain, representing a clear breach of trust,” an ICO spokesperson said on Wednesday.
The regulator also confirmed that “the appropriate and proportionate enforcement response” for the particular case.”People should be able to trust that the personal information they’re giving to healthcare settings is safe and protected from exploitation,” said the ICO’s executive director, adding, “When this trust is broken, it’s right that the law allows us to take action.”
The ICO has dismissed wider speculation regarding systemic failures within the London Clinic, saying, “We will not hesitate to pursue criminal prosecution where it is necessary and proportionate to do so.”
The London Clinic welcomed the regulator’s swift action in handling the case and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high security standards to protect client data.
As Kate Middleton’s resilience against cancer continues making headlines, here’s hoping that the Princess of Wales’s private data remains protected from unwanted public viewing.
